Holiday Cupcakes: Halloween

I am a HUGE fan of cupcakes! Especially as treats to bring to potlucks at work or to make for friends and family. Holidays are always a great time to make them too thanks to all the specialty decorations and candies you can adorn them with. I used to enjoy making Valentines cupcakes each year but had never really thought about making them for other holidays until a few weeks ago when I came across some pictures of design ideas. They sparked a conversation at work between Terra and I and we immediately started planning how we would recreate them and bring them in as a treat for our coworkers.

We managed to learn from a mistake we've made several times in the past and rather than trying to accomplish everything in one night, this time around we decided to pace ourselves and split the tasks up into two nights. So we baked 60+ cupcakes on one of our Sunday Fundays while watching the new TV show Once Upon a Time and trying to catch up on Season 1 of Walking Dead (our genre choices covered both extremes nicely!) Then after work the next day, we settled in at my place and got to work on the decorating. That was a lot of fun! Somehow we were able to stay fairly organized about it all so the mess was minimal and, once we got on a roll, we finished pretty quickly.

After all was said and done, we ended up with 60 fabulous cupcakes! Twenty tombstones on white cake, 20 spiders on chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and sprinkles, and 20 little devils on red velvet cake. Surprisingly enough, the devils proved to be the hardest and most time consuming to decorate. We even went as far as to dip candy corn in chocolate to make the horns seeing as we couldn't find an easier alternative. Plus, trying to make dark red frosting was difficult. We finally gave up after 1 1/2 tubes of red food dye but the color worked out well in the end. The tombstones were my favorite! Milano cookies as the grave and crushed Oreos as the dirt. We had a blast making them all and even more fun seeing the reactions of everyone who saw them afterward. Needless to say, they were a hit at work and so we've already begun to plan out our Thanksgiving cupcakes! : )

Random Fact About Me #6472: More often than not, I tend to choose salty snacks over sweets. Chips and salsa are my favorite!
